Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students see school as a safe place and come each day ready to learn. All students at our school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. They strive to make the most of each day, despite the challenges they may be facing at home. My class loves challenging themselves to learn more, and are eager to see their growth in reading every day.
My students love coming to school each day to learn more about themselves as individuals.
They enjoy being able to show their understanding in many different ways, both on paper and though technology and love being given the chance to boost their computer literacy skills. Utilizing technology not only builds these important life skills that will help my students be successful outside of school, but also allow for differentiation that is necessary for each of them to succeed.
My Project
My students love the days that we get to use the school laptops. They are better able to express themselves in writing when they don't have to focus on their penmanship. Struggling readers are able to focus on the content of their writing without worrying about how specific letters are written because the keyboard takes care of that for them! We have also been able to find fun and engaging online math games which has helped show my students a variety of ways to go about learning.
The problem with our current technology is that we share one set of laptops with three other classes!
We need four Chromebooks to enhance their computer literacy skills and make the most of their learning time!
This means that about 80 students are using the same 18 laptops. Because of the many hands that sees these laptops, many are missing keys making it challenging for each and every one of my students to have access to one. We also only get them for one academic block each week (and even with this we sometimes lose out due to field trips, guest teachers and assemblies- all the extras that make elementary school fun).
I want my students to be able to feel confident in their computer literacy, not only in school but in their future lives. These laptops would help make use of our IXL subscription during literacy centers and allow more technology time, which many of my students miss out on outside of school. We will also be able to utilize them during the math block to play fun and engaging math games to build foundational skills.
