Jennifer Fleming once said, "Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow’s skills today.”
In order to truly make my students college and career ready, they need assess to the tools, technology and problem-solving opportunities they will meet in the real world.
Last year, I created a Makerspace in our elementary school's media center to promote STEM with our students, parents and staff.
Once a week, 4th and 5th grade makerspace participants gathered to work on independent and group projects in areas such as 3D design, computer programming, arts and crafts, electronics and much more. Students were actively engaged in open-ended, student-led activities but some students needed even more enrichment than my resources could provide. We have a high percentage of gifted and talented students who are ready for even more advanced challenges!
My Project
Makerspace participants will be able to use the requested materials to create more 3D models using the filament for the 3Doodlers that we own, invent robotic Lego creations using the Lego Mindstorms set, explore advanced computer programs by using the Raspberry Pi and invent new devices or games powered by the battery holders. Students will be able to use the multimeter to test voltage, resistance, amps and electrical current flow of their creations to ensure safety and proper power supply. Students with beginner knowledge of electricity can use the AC adapters for our Snap Circuits sets to avoid using lots of batteries, while the advanced users can utilize the sensor, drive shield and chassis to create an Arduino-controlled vehicle. The voice recorder will assist students in their multimedia projects that they create while the duct tape will allow students to create functional and artistic creations.
As we continue our Makerspace program, these resources will help us expand our offerings while supporting our school's STEM initiative from our school improvement plan.
Your donations to our project will allow our Makerspace participants to truly expand their ideas of what's possible through this unique STEM exploration. This will open the doors for both boys and girls to experience the power of STEM skills in their daily lives and in their futures.
