My students need over 70 new books to read that will interest them, including Diario de Greg, Junie B. Jones, and Dinosaurios con plumas.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While my school has Spanish language books for beginning readers, there is little available for older ELL students to read in their native language.
As a Title One reading teacher, I work with struggling readers.
All of my students are native Spanish-speakers from a high poverty area. I mainly work with the students who are not ready for monolingual (mainstream) English classrooms. Many of my third and fourth graders have not experienced success in school and are no longer motivated to do well.
My Project
My students, particularly the older third and fourth graders, need books to read that will interest them. Grade-level books in English are too hard for them to read independently. That means they are often stuck reading "baby" books- or rather, choosing not to read. Interesting chapter books and grade-level nonfiction books in Spanish will give them the chance to read books that are more age-appropriate and increase the chances that they will want to read. These books will be used for self-selected reading in the classroom and for students to check out and read at home. The books for which I am requesting multiple copies will be for us to read and study together in class.
We know that without practice, struggling readers will never become good readers.
Without books they are both interested in and are able to read, they will probably choose not to read. In my first project, we received some interesting but challenging books in Spanish and I saw my students' motivation skyrocket. We need more of these high-interest books to keep them reading!
