This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are fun-loving, happy kids in Prek thru fifth grade in a title one school. I work with individual students, small groups, and whole classrooms to improve literacy, language, and communication skills. We need to work on expanding their sentences and using more descriptive language.
My students need support to learn vocabulary comprehension, defining and describing, and making associations to use increasingly complex sentences.
My students have not had the same life experiences and exposure to culture that others have had. Because of this, they exhibit a limited vocabulary and have great difficulty with their literacy skills and verbal expression. Skills that we take for granted when reading a book, website, email, newspaper can be extremely difficult for my students. The EET is based on research and uses a simple mulitsensory approach. Other SLPs in my school system have seen amazing results with this tool. It can be used for general descriptions, writing from prior knowledge, autobiographies/biographies, summarizing and more.
My Project
Help me give my students the Expanding Expression Tool Kit to aid in their written and verbal expression! This will provide them with visuals, manipulatives, and activities to improve their narrative and verbal/written expression skills. My students exhibit a limited expressive language and require support with their narrative skills.
This program will provide a systematic way for my students to expand their vocabulary and improve their narrative skills both orally and in written form.
The kit provides a visual representation on how to describe a given object and a manipulative to aid in their success. In addition, there is a workbook with various activities to aid in these skills.
