My students need some resources to help them learn about their emotions this year. These books and finger puppets will help us explore new feelings and name them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school serves predominantly African-American students living in high poverty. My special education students are excited to come to school every day and learn, but they have higher needs than most other students, both academically and social-emotionally. I work with them throughout the school day and more intensively during Guided Reading class to help them become stronger readers and learners.
This year I am following my kindergarten class to first grade!
I love these kids, and I am super excited to start the year off running, since I already know them well and understand their unique needs.
My Project
My students are familiar with the basic emotions - happy, sad, angry, scared. But this year I'm planning to do a weekly Friday activity with my kids geared around social emotional learning, social skills, and self-regulation to help them expand their emotional vocabulary. We will also learn about the parts of our brains that control our emotions as well as the parts that help us calm down and use self control. However, I don't really have any books that specifically address these kinds of topics. Some of the most important topics we'll be talking about are self-control, positive self-talk, expressing feelings vs acting out, asking for help, how to choose self-monitoring strategies, respecting personal space, and how to deal with change in routine. The books on my wish list will help me broach these topics in a kid-friendly way.
Not only will these materials help me plan lessons that can teach my kids to advocate for themselves and express their emotions, but they will also help develop greater reading comprehension skills by fostering an understanding of character feelings and motivation!
