"Learning is an active process. We learn by doing." - Dale Carnegie.
I teach a fun, energetic group of kindergartners with a love of learning.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a variety of experiences into the classroom. They enjoy learning and are always ready and eager to explore and learn something new. Students take an active role in the learning by exploring and using their critical thinking skills daily. My goal is for all of my students to not only meet but exceed the Indiana Academic Standards by creating a student-centered classroom.
Eighty-eight percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center states that poverty is the best predictor of college attendance and completion. Their research has also found a good education is seldom available to children living in poverty, but the long-term solution is a high-quality education. Poverty is increasing, but the spending on education is not. The challenges my kindergartners face on a daily basis do not stop them from coming to school with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn.
My Project
These non-fiction Scholastic magazines, Let's Find Out and Science Spin, will help get my students excited about reading. These magazines have monthly and weekly themes that correspond with what we are doing in the classrooms. This allows us to also compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction.
These magazines break the outside world down into student friendly pieces that my kinders can understand!
We will use these during our literacy stations every week. Each learning group will do different things with them, depending on ability level; however, every group will be learning the same things.
These magazines allow me to easily integrate literacy and science. This also allows me to differentiate instruction and give every student what they need to be successful. Non-fiction magazines always engage my kinders and I cannot wait to get these into their hands!
