Building with blocks helps young children develop intellectually, physically, and socially. As my students explore blocks and building they are experimenting with various math skills and properties of physics. They work together to problem solve while using precision and control to create buildings.
My students are 4- and 5-year-olds with unique personalities, interests, and learning styles.
We are in an inner-city school in Massachusetts with students coming from diverse families and neighborhoods.
Young children are inquisitive by nature and one of the things they are always interested in exploring is blocks. Over the last few months I have seen their block play expand from small, simple, and symmetrical structures to more elaborate and detailed designs.
My Project
I have introduced some new materials such as construction tools and marbles to see how their play has changed. I inquired with them what other types of materials they would like to use in the block area. Together they voted and the winner was hollow blocks. These various block materials will encourage them to create elaborate scenes using multiple materials. I hope to entice them to add more imaginative and pretend play into their block building with the vehicle. They are interested in using "blueprints", tools, and clipboards. These other block materials will inspire them to build upon their interest in architecture and imaginary play.
With hollow blocks and other materials to stimulate imaginative block play, I know my students will improve their understanding of gravity and balance.
They will have to work together to share the materials and cooperate to plan and execute their ideas. I am excited to see what new creations they will make and how their ideas will come to life with these new materials.
