Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school in a borough neighborhood in New York. The majority of my students are academically and emotionally challenged and suffer from trauma and poverty. As a result, they exhibit depression, anxiety, and exhibit aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. Their parents and caregivers are also struggling and aren't always able to provide their children with the tools they need to even have a chance of success. A large number of our students are living in temporary housing and are traveling over an hour each way just to get to school.
As a school counselor, students walk into my room...they are scared, upset, guarded and/or ashamed.
I feel a great responsibility to provide students, staff, and parents socio-emotional tools they need.
My Project
I am really excited about this project! As a veteran school counselor, I am still finding new ways to engage students and teach them tools that they will need in order to be more successful. With so many children (and adults) addicted to video games and technology, I am really committed to teaching techniques about how they can be more mindful and present in their lives. I have found so many books and games that teach elementary students to be more mindful.
I am looking to build and expand my counseling library by adding more books and games to teach mindfulness.
Last year we sadly lost a student (5th grade) to suicide, and even though she didn't leave a note, and wasn't bullied, I am convinced that she felt isolated because she didn't have access to technology. Teaching students mindfulness is a skill not only my students, but we all need in these trying times. These books will go a long way in helping to do this.
