Help me give my students novels that are at high reading levels. In my proposal, I have classic titles to include: "A Raisin the Sun" and "The Catcher in the Rye."
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are excited to be a part of a school that is on the move! The school is turning around its scores, and my 85 committed students are determined to bring home their best this year. During their 6th and 7th grade year they managed to increase the school’s performance score dramatically. This year, I want to give them the best opportunity to excel.
As an educator, I must do my best to provide my students with an equal learning environment.
My Project
I have students who are avid readers and I want to provide reading opportunities that challenge them. My students need novels that are at a high reading levels. I currently have grade appropriate novels in my classroom, but I am missing an opportunity to help grow my advanced students. I recently learned that our school library also maintains only middle school selections.
Students who do not read in their Zone of Proximal Development will have a hard time reading for pleasure.
It's very important that books are not too easy (boring) or too hard. We test students for their reading levels throughout the year. I was pleased to find out that I have a large selection of students who are reading beyond middle school levels.
Those students in particular also have a need to complete projects. They have enjoyed creating posters of covers and scenes from their readings.
