My Students

Most of my students live in low-income households. A few students don't see the point of school, because they think they will end up in a life they are already living. One student was completely serious when he replied, "I will never amount to anything. I will be living under a bridge somewhere". Another said, "They might as well do drugs because their family does and that is what they will be, so why not".

As a teacher, the answer to the constant question of "Why do we need to know this?" is this: We are giving you tools to add to your toolbox.

They may not use them all, but they don't know what they will need when they get out there to discover their place in the world. I want to add some more tools to their toolbox and encourage a love of reading. I want to do more novel units to expose my students to different worlds and vocabulary. To show how English is used in a wonderful way and how easy they can get to their dreams.

My Project

While it might just seem like a folder, this is a brilliant way to contain and showcase their work in English. I want them to see how they have progressed and what they have learned as the year continues. Each of my students will receive a folder to contain their work.

As they fill the folder with their writing, they can look back and see how much their writing skill has increased from the beginning.

It is important for students to see what the work has done for them and have proof that they are getting better.
