I work at a Title I school in Nashua, NH where about 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My first grade classroom is full of students from diverse cultural backgrounds and abilities.
They are curious, hard-working students who deserve the same experiences as students from more affluent communities.
I am working to help my students develop a growth mindset and show them that they can achieve anything they want in life despite various obstacles in their way.
My Project
My school was fortunate enough to receive a grant that allows my first graders to have Chromebooks in the classroom. Most of our students do not have access to technology at home, so this gives my students a chance to gain the skills they need to be successful in a technology-rich world. This technology gives each one of my students the opportunity to access the curriculum at their own academic level, engage in a variety of topics that interest them, as well as read and listen to inclusive literature. Additionally, there are a variety of programs available on the Chromebooks to help my English language learners and special education students.
Unfortunately, our access to these amazing learning opportunities is limited due to our lack of headphones.
Having a set of headphones for each student will allow the students to focus on the programs while limiting the noise around them. Additionally, it will prevent students working with me or completing other independent tasks from getting distracted by the noise from the Chromebooks.
