Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I, low income school located in Falls Church, Virginia. The community consists of families from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Our school has a large self contained program, 6 classrooms which total 37 students and I am lucky to be 1 of these teachers. The majority of our students have autism and/or other cognitive disabilities. As part of their disabilities they have deficits in the areas of communication, academics, social skills and daily transitions.
Our school prides itself in maintaining high expectations for our students.
We do this through close communication with parents, collaborative work within our team, individualizing programs for each student and creating nurturing, predictable and positive environments. As a result, our students never cease to amaze us by not only reaching but surpassing the goals and expectations that are set out for them.
Our students love to come to school. They always arrive with smiles on their faces and are excited to learn.
My Project
My students have difficulty expressing themselves both verbally and even more with written language. Most of the students I teach have autism and have severe deficits in communication and receive additional speech and language therapy. This resource would give me additional tools to help expand their communication skills and become more independent. The kit includes hands on tactile materials which make the exercises more engaging. The kit also includes fun games to practice and apply what they have learned.I am excited to have this in my classroom and to begin to teach my students how to use the materials and can not wait to see the growth in their communication skills.
