My school is a Title I school of 125 students located in North Idaho. Most of our families live at or below the poverty line. This elementary school holds a special place in my heart, since my children went here well before I became a certified teacher and began teaching fifth grade here three years ago.
My fifth grade students are excited and eager to learn; they love engaging with technology for research and enrichment.
In addition, they take seriously their position as "the oldest kids in the school" and are always willing to help the younger students.
My Project
I would like to add Kindle Fires to my classroom library to offer a larger variety of reading materials to my students. I believe that students need to fall in love with reading and that for most children it is simply a matter of finding that one book that sparks their interest.
When I think about the vast collection of reading materials that would be available to my students using a digital library, it blows my mind!
There is so much more variety than I can provide for them in a classroom library with a "not unlimited" budget!
I love books, and I always will enjoy the feeling of a book in my hand as I turn the page, but it is important to introduce children to a variety of reading materials. E readers seem to be a very practical solution to building an amazing classroom library.
