Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom of 23 students, about half of whom receive special education services. Our students are eager to learn and need the resources in order to be successful in their studies! Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with most of our students receiving free lunch. My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them for the rest of the day!
My Project
Our classroom library is rapidly expanding! What a great problem to have! We have new books graciously donated by members of DonorsChoose, friends and family members from the community, and Project Cicero (a used book donation program in our city). Our brand new set of book bins has overflowed and our bookcases are no longer sufficient.
Help us grow our brains by growing our library, we need new bookcases to house our books!
These bookcases will house many new books that we have, and will be especially helpful in preparing all of our students for the high-stakes fourth grade state exams, where they are required to demonstrate formal language skills. In addition, the English Language Learners in our classroom who are still developing English syntax and conventions will greatly benefit from a set of books they can read independently to speed their transition to an English-speaking classroom.
A vast classroom library with choices for all students at all levels in all genres is the basis for developing a love of reading and the foundation for making children lifelong readers.
Our class of fourth graders averages a second grade reading level, and closing this gap means constantly searching for ways to expand our selection of books. An organized, expansive leveled library will really make a difference for this class.
