Students in our classes differ in culture, language, socio-economic levels, race, and academic and social skills. Yet they all come to our classes to learn to read. Some students need additional supports to achieve this goal.
Our classroom is in a small school in an urban setting.
We have a diverse school demographic composed of students rich in culture and language. Our international students range from those visiting from around the world as their parents attend graduate school to those eligible for refugee status. We have students who have faced crisis, living in transitional housing. We have students that have special needs and students that are advanced learners. Our classrooms are small models of the real world and we work hard to ensure equity for all.
My Project
In our classrooms, we are learning about how communities are shaped and developed over time. In the upcoming months, the 2/3 teachers in my school are hoping to align our reading, writing, social studies, and science units so that we can teach about our local tribal nations and their tribal sovereignty.
Also, we will study the geography, history, biodiversity, and government of Washington state, relevant to the 2nd and 3rd grade standards.
Our hope is that we are able to create an aligned unit and utilize the books in this project to help the unit come alive! Currently, we have limited resources to teach about our state. These books will help our 2 classrooms provide ample texts for students to access to learn about the history, stories, and culture of Coastal Tribes in Washington.
