My students need 3 Google Chromebooks to use during math centers and PE equipment to help release some of their built up energy in order to help them focus in class.
I teach math, science, and social studies to 52 wonderful 3rd grade students! Our school services about 700 students in PreK through 4th grade in a high poverty area. Despite any outside obstacles, my group is very energetic this year and always ready to learn.
As soon as they enter the classroom door, they are eager and excited to engage in any activity I have planned for them.
Their readiness to learn is contagious and is the reason why I love my job so much.
My Project
Our students only get one recess during the day. They don't have much time to release any of their excess energy. It is very hard for them to remain focused when they do not have any time to socialize and play together. With the weather in Louisiana, many times our playground is too wet to play on. We play on the cement outside our classroom, but students have nothing to play with. I would like to purchase jump ropes, skip-its, and catch games to give students something fun and constructive to do at recess. I am hoping this will give them the break they need so that when they return to class they are focused and ready to learn. This will also teach them social skills and how to share and work together as a team.
I would also like to purchase 3 Google Chromebooks to incorporate into my math centers.
During math centers students work on a fluency program which includes fun interactive games. They also work on a program called Accelerated Math which allows them to work on their own level at their pace. This is very helpful for my higher students. I am able to push them even higher with challenging problems while I work in small groups with students who are struggling. The students love working on the computers! It keeps them actively engaged in the curriculum. I have seen great results in the past with the program and hope to see even better results this year!
It is my goal this year to give the students more small breaks during the day to exercise and get some energy out so that we can exercise our bodies to open our minds. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!
