This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast & lunch. Our students rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition. The school services many homeless students. These students live in transient shelters. The homeless students have poor nutrition, resulting in poor health and are frequently absent. We have several special needs students in our class receiving special services.
There are 54 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.
We have 8 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino and Arabic. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud and do not have educational toys at home. The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially & emotionally.
My Project
The Pre K students will exercise and get a cardiovascular and muscle toning workout by using the Fold and Go Trampoline, BasketBall Hoop & Stilts. These young children need to develop their gross motor skills. The children will be able to use these items in inclement weather when we try to do as much indoor play as possible. These pieces of equipment can be used outside as well.
A fit body means a fit mind and regular exercise benefits the brain.
Regular exercise can improve attention span, memory, reduce stress & effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In short, staying in shape develops brain power. By supporting these items for our project, you will enable the children of the Pre-K class an opportunity to engage in muscle and cardiovascular toning.
