My Students
This current school year, along with past school years, I have had the pleasure of being the Adaptive P.E. teacher. My classes consist of students with Intellectual Disabilites and/or Austism Spectrum Disorder. ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder. InD is a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. Programs such as adaptive P.E. helps to improve the lifestyle of children with special needs. It allows competency in gross motor skills to increase, help to control obesity which can lead to other health issues, improve self-esteem and social skills, which is extremely important for students with ASD and it encourages an active lifestyle while maintaining motivation in various aspects of their lives.
My Project
The supplies I'm requesting will help my adaptive physical education students work on building their motor skills while increasing their physical skills.
Students with autism tend to have a challenging time acquiring lifelong skills that will help them developmentally and socially.
I will work on improving their overall fitness and knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle. By using the requested items, I will be able to enhance their cognitive knowledge of physical fitness, health and overall well-being.
Being physically fit increases a students cognitive ability to learn therefore, the fitness dice which explores movement through reading will increase my student's muscle endurance and cognitive ability, while the catch pads, batting tee and qwik nets for tennis will help improve their hand/eye coordination and mobility.
