My Students

I teach in a classroom with an average of 22 second graders at a Title I school in the OKC area. They come from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. Many of them are being raised by grandparents or are in single parent homes. As such, most of them lack the use of technology and/or assistance with their school work at home.

Despite some of their obstacles outside of school, they amaze me with their enthusiasm to learn.

They are facing the pressure of passing the third grade reading test the following year and are working so hard to be ready for this challenge. They are setting goals and celebrating their progress!

My Project

If my students had Chromebooks they would be able to access the Lexia Core 5 reading program. This program allows students to have personal reading instruction in the 6 areas of reading skills. It guides students at their own pace and provides more in-depth instruction if it detects a student struggling. Teachers can use this program to monitor the student’s progress and provide data and specific resources that the students could use to help with individual or small group instruction. It motivates the students by giving certificates of completion for each standard they master. They love enhancing their reading skills with this program!
