Help me give my students physical and mental exercise equipment, including Snap Circuits, Design & Play STEAM Cars Kits, resistance bands, boxing gloves, and more, that will strengthen their bodies and minds.
Our students' behaviors prevent them from attending their assigned schools. We serve students from grades kindergarten through 5th from all elementary schools in Rock Hill School District (South Carolina).
Our therapeutic program is designed to modify student behavior through training teachers and parents, teaching students, and transitioning students back to their home schools.
Most of our students come from low-income homes and receive counseling outside of the school. They are placed in our program due to disruptive behaviors. Our program is a last resort for many of our students and prevents them from being expelled from school. We give students an opportunity for a fresh start on life.
We equip students, parents, and teachers with strategies and techniques to support good mental health in and out of the school setting. We also teach students learning strategies and academic content to experience success in school.
A student is transitioned back to his/her school once he/she is able to complete school work and interact with others without disrupting the learning environment.
My Project
The equipment provided by this project will give the students tools and strategies to reduce or eliminate disruptive behaviors. I will use this equipment for all students (grades K-5) in our program.
Research shows that strong proprioception (awareness of the position and movement of the body) improves a person's attention span. We will use the exercise equipment and Crocodile Hop Floor Game as part of our weekly routine. Use of the balance boards and resistance bands will help improve the students' attention spans. We have punching bags in our classrooms but no kid boxing gloves. Our students use the punching bags to let off steam when they are upset and as an incentive for completing work and good behavior. The Crocodile Hop Floor Game gives our younger students (grades K-2) the opportunity to exercise and cooperate with one another.
The STEAM kits, Snap Circuit kits, and kinetic sand build attention span, creativity, and background knowledge. Our students will work with one another to reach a common goal with these hands-on learning tools.
