Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are raising the most sedentary and unhealthy youth generation, and in low poverty areas numbers increase dramatically.
Having a meaningful, high quality physical education is one of the best ways to defeat this trend.
Physical exercises in schools have positive influence on impulsive eating and interactions. Effective physical education can also have calming effect on students by releasing extra energy.
Most of our students do not have access to public parks, safe places to ride their skateboards or to just play around in their front living area. I teach at a Title I inner-city school in California where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Every student has access to computers, computer programs, books and workbooks.
What our students lack are quality art, music and P.E. activities. Out of the three categories PE can be accessible; if the students had some equipment. PE can be a motivating factor for so many students to look forward to coming to school. The equipment's can be also used for years to come and provide much needed outdoor energy releasing activities.
Thank you for your consideration.
My Project
Students will use the equipment during PE and recess. Students will make up teams while building social skills & interpersonal relationships. With access to basketballs, jump ropes & rubber balls, students who aren't as athletic can have chances to practice while others play. Some students have never learned how to jump rope. If they had access to it in the safety of school they can find out that jumping rope can be fun & healthy. Students can also learn & enjoy playing kickball which doesn't require a playing field like baseball, etc.
There are some students in my school who don't participate in regular physical activities due to them not having easy access to sports equipment and providing this equipment can help change their perception.
Once they engage, they may find that playing outside can be a fun and quite enjoyable.
Studies have shown that playing outside can have numerous benefits;
promotes social skills,increases attention span,reduces stress.
