My Students
My students are special needs students diagnosed with autism. They are from a low-income/high poverty school district. They are faced with many challenges both in and outside of the classroom. Many of my students come from single parent homes and they lack resources to become successful students. Although they face many struggles they are happy, smart and eager to learn on a daily basis. My students like to be physically active and they enjoy trying new sports. While they have some physical limitations, they are always willing to try and have a positive attitude.
Through sports and the use of a variety of equipment, my hope is that they will increase coordination and balance so they they can succeed in and outside of the classroom.
My Project
My ultimate goal is to start a badminton club with my special needs students. This sport is one that has captured the attention of my other Physical Education classes but especially my special needs class and its a great motivator to get them to work towards a common goal.
There are many benefits to playing this game for example they gain balance and coordination, agility, speed, hand/eye coordination among other skills.
They will also learn good sportsmanship and communication skills. All of these skills will help them become better individuals outside of school. Overall its a great sport to play because of the many benefits to their bodies and brain.
