My students are energetic, eager, and excited to come to school each day. They love trying new things and can’t wait to ask me each day what we will be doing. My students love coming to my Physical Education class and having an opportunity to use all of the energy they have stored up. They especially love to do activities that they wouldn’t have the equipment for at home.
Our school is located in the small town of Chatham, VA.
We have approximately 250 students in grades PK-5th. A large portion of our student population is at a low socioeconomic status. Despite the things that our students may go through, they still love to learn and achieve at a very high level. School is their happy place.
My Project
These exercise balls and rhythm sticks will allow students in all grade levels to take part in a cardio drumming unit. The exercise balls will be placed on buckets and students will each have two sticks. As I lead them in a cardio drumming routine they will be squatting, jumping, turning, stepping, and moving all while keeping rhythm to the music and drumming with their sticks. I can only imagine how excited they will be when I introduce a drumming sequence to their favorite song or even allow them to come up with the moves themselves. This unit will also challenge classes to work together as a whole and synchronize the movements and beats. The possibilities and routines are endless. This is a unit that will peak all students’ interest regardless of their fitness level or their academic abilities. Students will be increasing their cardiovascular endurance and focus and will carry their determined mindset back into the classroom after the Physical Education class is complete.
