The beginning of the 2020-2021 school year started remotely and will move into a hybrid model with some online learning and some in-person learning. We will follow guidelines from the CDC, and the number of coronavirus cases in our county will be monitored to determine the best learning model. At any given moment, we may need to change the location of instruction.
Our classroom is involved in the Autism Initiative Verbal Behavior Program.
The eight autistic students in my class have a wide range of needs that are addressed individually in one-on-one intensive teaching sessions and through direct instruction in a small group setting.
The students in my class have a wide range of interests, academic skills, and social skills. My students perform best with hands-on materials and visuals. Variable reinforcement centered around the senses (scents to smell, items to touch, edibles to eat, sounds to hear, and use of movement) are used throughout the day to keep students motivated and working at a good rate.
My Project
Due to COVID-19, there has been a shift to online learning whether remotely or in person. While learning through instruction delivered through a computer, there is a substantial amount of sitting. Prolonged periods of sitting in hard plastic chairs can cause damage to a young child's growing body. When students return to the classroom, there will be restrictions on movement in the classroom to maintain social distancing. The SitRite Chair is the perfect solution. This chair offers cushioned support and promotes proper body alignment. It also has a detachable foot rest for younger learners. For those students who need a little movement, they can swivel back and forth. Students can rest their arms on the arm rests and adjust their seat up and down. With the SitRite Chairs, my students will be able to stay engaged and sit for longer periods of time in comfort.
