My students need a variety of National Geographic children's books including First Big Book of Dinosaurs, Animal Encyclopedia, First Big Book of Space and World Atlas.
I want my students to say "Look at this beautiful National Geographic book with amazing pictures on the cover. I have to open it!"
Our Title I elementary school is located in Brooklyn, NY and services students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
100% of students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from homes where reading is not modeled and there are no books. Language is also a roadblock to successful skill building. My third grade students are struggling with reading and writing. It's hard to teach reading when students see reading as a horrible chore, and not as something that enhances lives.
We are one of the lowest performing 3rd grade classes in our school. I know that the further my students fall behind the harder it is for them to move forward. Having a compelling and interesting classroom library can help me pull them into a great book and get them to LOVE reading.
My Project
My students need a variety of National Geographic children's books including First Big Book of Dinosaurs, Weird but True Gross: 300 Slimy, Sticky, and Smelly Facts, Animal Encyclopedia, First Big Book of Space and World Atlas and Why?: Over 1,111 Answers to Everything.
These books will be placed in different sections of my classroom library so more students can have a better chance of seeing a book that interests them. The books will be used during Independent Reading and in small group instruction. I'll also be projecting the books for whole group instruction during Reading and Science. I know when I hook a student into a great book their chances for success dramatically increase.
Your financial support of my project will ensure that my wonderful third graders are exposed to reading materials that my school just doesn't provide.
These books can help us achieve academic success in the classroom and create life-long readers, as well!
