Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very resilient and positive about school. They live in a remote area where homes are very spread out. The weather can be harsh so they are so excited when they get to come to school. You can tell they are craving the stimulus around them. They get to see their friends, learn new things, and feel connected to a community outside of home.
They are so excited about learning.
They love science and they love art. Since we have been learning online, bringing things/activities home to them is more challenging. Many come from low income families and do not have extra money to purchase basic school items or even purchase a school lunch. When they are at school, they are so excited to use classroom manipulatives and learning tools. They love getting new books.
My First Graders are kind. They want so badly to do good. They love giving and getting compliments. They want to impress their parents and they want to show me what great readers they are. Our school motto is being "Safe, Respectful, and Responsible."
My Project
Until now, my school has been purchasing the Scholastic articles for my students each year. As a teacher, I know their value. My students are learning at home, in a remote area where the internet can be very unpredictable. These Scholastic news articles not only come in colorful paper form but are also online.
They are colorful exciting, informational reading for 1st Graders.
Not only are they learning reading skills, but students learn about things all around the world, things they may never have any exposure to.
There has never been a Scholastic News article I have given my students that they weren't super excited about. They love learning about interesting animals, important history, traditions, technology, holidays, and so many more topics. Not only does the paper article go home with them, but they will be able to get online at their own pace and follow the article being read with them. This supports their learning.
They also get fun, yet very educational videos directly related to the topic that often includes important vocabulary. There are vocabulary games, spelling games, writing responses, and additional activities and resources online, not only for the kids but also for the teachers. I often use ideas for writing, activities, and science projects. They are even more excited about these activities because the activities have to do with something they just learned. Getting students excited to learn more about their world is very important.
