Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an integrated preschool classroom located in an urban city. Most families are living below the poverty line. The classroom is made up of two sessions with fifteen children in each. The children range in ages from 3-5. Half of the children are diagnosed with special needs with developmental levels ranging from 15 months to six years old. Many of the children are also non-English speaking.
It is my goal to make these children's first school experience a memorable one.
For many of the children, when entering the classroom, it is their first opportunity to interact with peers their own age, learn songs, listen to stories, and work together to create things.
Throughout the year the children learn to be compassionate towards others and how to be a good friend. It is wonderful to watch the children teach and encourage others when needed.
My Project
These new math manipulatives will help me to create interactive and engaging small group math lessons. The ice cream cones will be a great transition from summer vacation and introduction to 1:1 correspondence as well as matching quantities to numerals. The ice cream cones will also be used with children who are not developmentally ready to count but are able to match colors and or identify them. The magnetic shapes will be used to work on shape and color identification as well as fine motor skills. These magnetic builders will also encourage the children to plan ahead and then create what they envisioned. The sequencing game is going to be used to work on improving matching skills as well as sequencing. I will use these to introduce the concepts of first, second and third. Overall these materials will be a great addition to the math centers and will encourage longer engagement while learning through play.
