Help me give my students a classroom library that captivates their interest and meets them at their reading level! My list includes boxed sets of high-interest series like Wings of Fire and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
I am a special education teacher who has classes of 6th of 7th grade struggling readers. These kiddos come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all want to learn and become better readers and writers. Each one of them struggles daily to read and write at a level commensurate with their general education classmates.
My students have a vast well of experiences and assets.
They want their background to be honored and need to be held to a high standard. I love each of my students and strive to meet their needs every day.
My Project
Research demonstrates that the single most powerful way for young readers to improve their reading ability is to read more. This is a struggle for my students, all of whom receive special education services for reading difficulties. Among the few titles at our school library, very few are written at my students' level. Those that are just don't capture their attention.
The books in this project are cool enough to capture the attention of my struggling readers while being comprehensible to them.
We will use them during our 20 minutes daily of sustained silent reading. Together we've built class and individual reading goals with milestone rewards to keep our momentum. Now we just need a library to match our appetite to read!
