This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The majority of my students come from single parent homes where the extra strain of working two to three jobs leaves very little time to focus on quality time reading. Several of our families are from non-English speaking homes as well as being in a low socio-economic status.
This particular group loves to read and experience good stories.
They are happy to be at school and eager to please.
I have an amazing group of Kindergarteners who are so eager to learn! One of their favorite parts of our classroom is the library center. Having books to share with their friends is a highlight of their day.
My Project
My students love reading and having new books! Coming from low income households many don't have the privilege of reading daily at home. Having a classroom library with new books lets them know they deserve the best and gives them the opportunity to explore with their imagination.
Instilling a love reading early will help to promote literacy skills.
Having a variety of different genres and authors will give them inspiration to want to become writers and/or illustrators themselves. Having a library where our books aren't falling apart lets them know how much I value literature and want to pass that on to them.
