Students in grades two through eight served in the resource classroom at Happy Valley School are labeled learning disabled and educable mentally handicapped. Due to their disabilities in reading, these students are unable to read on grade level. In fact, students read from one to three grade levels below their current grade level placement. Resource students, along with the other students in the school, participate in the Accelerated Reading program. Students are tested to determine their reading level and then check out books on that level. The problem arises with resource students who are reading so far below grade level that the books they are capable of reading independently are often topics below their interest level. For example, a fifth grade student is reading on a second grade level. Certainly, the topics they are interested in are not found in a second grade book.
I had my students review Accelerated Reading books that are high interest topics, but written on a low reading level. They narrowed down the list and voted on the sets of books they were most interested in reading. As a group of students we decided to submit this to DonorsChoose with the hopes that someone will purchase these books and accompanying Accelerated Reading quizzes. This will give my students the opportunity to read a book of interest on their reading level while also meeting the goal of their regular classroom teacher for participating in the school-wide reading program. Students said if they had a selection of books with interesting topics they would be EXCITED about READING. Student excitement will be generated from their participation in the book selection process, thrill of receiving these books and quizzes from a caring donor, reading books designed for student interest, and ultimately their increased success in the school-wide Accelerated Reading program.
