My students come from a wide geographic area, some riding a bus for nearly two hours (one way) to arrive at our school. Some have grown up on family farms, and others are from urban areas and have rarely been outside the city. Many of our students are active members of the FFA and 4H.
Our school is a fully functioning farm which provides students with a strong agricultural and environmental education.
Our students are going to trade schools, college, and the military after graduation.
My Project
One of the most exciting and challenging parts of chemistry is providing students with evidence of the existence of electrons and electron orbitals. Students will create their own devices to see the individual spectral lines that are unique to each element. They will also see how scientists are able to identify substances based on their spectral lines, which ultimately led to our discovery of helium on the sun before scientists discovered it on Earth.
Seeing the spectral lines for the first time provides a tiny glimpse into the many wonderful mysteries of the universe.
Spectral lines help provide evidence that atoms are surrounded by electron orbitals that can help better explain why some compounds form and why other compounds will not.
Spectrum tubes also provides a look into one of the most powerful tools used to identify new elements.
