My Students

We are teachers and supporters of students with intellectual disabilities within a self-contained special needs classroom integrated into a traditional public school.

Our students range from individuals with multiple disabilities including mental and physical aspects to students on the Autism spectrum.

Our students often use augmentative communication devices in order to communicate their wants and needs. Teachers use an adapted curriculum in order to teach our students math, language arts, social studies, science, and social/behavioral/life skills.

Although our classrooms are self-contained settings, these kiddos strive to be included with the general education population as much as possible through elective classes, National Junior Honor Society, and Special Olympics Project Unified activities.

My Project

Having a trained yoga instructor lead adapted yoga practices on a regular schedule will improve the well being of students with special needs. Special needs students tend to be less physically active due to limitations of physical and mental abilities. This program is specifically adapted to meet every student where they are and then to help them grow.

Students will learn breathing techniques to use as coping mechanisms when in stressful situations, physical movement to improve body awareness and learn about different forms of yoga to use off their mat and in the real world.

Special needs students, general education peers, and teachers will all benefit from the mental and physical work that yoga brings to the table.
