Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A large percentage of our school population are students from low income homes and have limited resources with little or no access to computers. They enjoy using different tools for learning. Students who rarely participate come alive when we work with technology. Much of our district would be considered rural, and as such many of our students do not have the experiences that students who live closer to urban areas experience. Our school is unique in that many of our students are transfer students who have chosen to attend our school. We are located next to a university, which allows our students to attend dual enrollment classes, accruing college hours to be used after high school graduation. We have an extremely limited budget that provides the basic supplies. However, in today’s society, some items that used to be considered extravagant, now are part of the essential supply list for each student.
My Project
By allowing access to new Chromebooks within our science classroom, my high school students will gain admittance to the wide array of scientific knowledge available during research and hands-on projects. Students will use Chromebooks to demonstrate their knowledge as they access our online curriculum, research information, and use the Chromebooks to correlate data collection and disaggregation. Lastly, various computer simulations will be used to bring virtual labs to the classroom that we do not have the capability to create in our high school lab. Having access to technology within the classroom will help ensure my students are better prepared for understanding the environmental and biological decisions that will be made throughout their lives.
