My class is R.B. Elementary's 1st grade inclusion class where most of the students with extra needs are placed. My students have a wide variety of needs, backgrounds, cultures, and languages making us an eclectic power house of learning!
My students are incredibly tough and they continually impress me with their perseverance and grit.
Due to a teacher change halfway through this school year, their classroom has been quite bare for a few weeks. These students thrive on structure and support and having that infrastructure in the classroom is key.
When learning about Martin Luther King Jr., my students were all asked what their dream was. Here are some of their answers:
"My dream is to play with the whole town."
"My dream is for everyone to love one another."
"My dream is to live in a castle with princesses and unicorns."
"My dream is for everyone to take hands, and for an enemy to be a friend."
I have no idea where some of these students got these ideas and words, but I do know that these dreams are a very accurate representation of their pure and loving hearts.
My Project
These classroom essentials will make an incredible difference for my students who have an extremely hard time sitting in their seats to learn. Because some of many of my students are not neurotypical, they are even more wiggly than most 1st graders. Having "wobble" chairs that allow them to twist, lean, and wiggle while seated in front of their work will drastically improve their ability to focus.
When I first stepped into this classroom in December, it had almost none of the classroom essentials in it.
My students didn't have a carpet, reading nook, calendar, word wall, chromebook organizer, etc. These students deserve to feel loved, included, and taken care of in their learning environment. Many of these students don't like learning because they don't think that they are good at it. I want to create a learning environment that shows them how special they are and how fun learning can be.
