It can be easy to forget that children are just 7 years old when they enter second grade! My students are a diverse group of kiddos who come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. On average, students in my classroom have 5 different languages spoken at home other than English. Roughly 50% of the students in my class come from households that are below the poverty line. Regardless of socioeconomic status, my aim as a teacher is to provide all students with the services, supplies, and support they need to ensure equal opportunities for success.
My classroom acts as a safe-space for students to celebrate what makes each person unique, explore their independence, and find creative outlets.
At the age of 7, kids are curious about the world around them and often experience it by "doing". I love watching their faces light up when they learn or try something new. There is no better job in the world!
My Project
A major benefit of flexible seating is that students can MOVE (wobble chairs)! Movement in the classroom has been shown to increase focus and participation at school. Unlike desks, flexible seating allows students to quickly move seats to find personal space, pair up with a partner, or form a collaborative group. Students are encouraged to take turns and share supplies when using flexible seating options like these lap desks, floor cushions, and wobble chairs.
Flexible seating choices empower students by offering them some degree of control over their learning environment.
Many flexible seating options also encourage students' sense of touch which can be especially helpful for those who have ADD, ADHD, or an ASD. I believe that every child deserves an opportunity to work in a space that is most comfortable for THEM. Thank you for taking the time to consider our classroom project!
