Help me give my students a sensory snuggle pillow along with the other smaller sensory items to provide the environment conducive to learning in the classroom.
Our school is located in rural Kentucky. We have 1/2 of our students that come from families with incomes below the poverty rate. We are also in close proximity to a military base and frequently we have children that are transitioning to a new home and school environment. Besides these challenging situations, we have begun to experience a drug epidemic in our small community which continues to grow and influence the area. Our students have many challenges before they even step foot in the door of the school.
My Project
It is very important for our students to be in the classroom with their peers as much as they possibly can. This increases their learning skills and their social skills. Everyone wants to be included and part of a group. My students can't participate without sensory adaptations in place. For example, I have requested the Bonito Riding Horse that will provide vestibular input and help with strengthening the core at the same time. Without using the horse several times in the day, a student may begin to scream and act out. This would prevent that student from participating in class. We want to address their sensory issues prior to coming into the class and by addressing their needs prior to the class, we increase their success rate.
By addressing their sensory needs, we are allowing our students to be included with their same age peers with differing abilities.
We work hard to promote inclusion to all students so that they are able to participate fully in their education.
