My students are eager to learn. They have a great foundation in the area of math and without the appropriate manipulatives, I worry that they will not continue to make the connections when dealing with tens and ones, 1:1 correspondence, and solving simple equations.
Our classroom consists of 6 students (1 female and 5 males) on the autism spectrum.
They are currently in a self contained classroom and meet with typical peers for recess, lunch, and resources. The structured learning environment classroom is a diploma bound program that has a goal for the students to eventually be mainstreamed into a regular educational classroom. They are bright, caring, and love to learn. Our school is eager to teach kids not only academics, but also about caring for others. Our students may struggle in the area of language due to their disability, but they are very compassionate when it comes to each other in their classroom. They like to help one another when we are completing academic tasks as well as during social skills. They are working on sharing, and communicating their needs so that others are aware of what they need or how they may be feeling.
My Project
With the supplies that I have requested, my students will be able to visualize and manipulate materials to get a better understanding of how numeracy works. These students are not only visual learners, but tactile learners as well, and by being able to maneuver manipulatives to identify 10's and 1's, solve simple addition or subtraction equations, and count using 1:1 correspondence will enhance their desire and ability to learn.
Donations to our SLE (Structured Learning Environment) will improve our classroom during math instruction by enhancing our children's drive to learn as they are able to manipulate materials to solve problems while getting a better understanding of numeracy, solving equations, 1:1 correspondence and understanding the number line and how you can use it as a tool when asked to solve mathematical equations.
