Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids are the best! We have a very average mix of ability levels, but what stands out about our kids is their determination and grit. This tight-knit group of kids is also extremely compassionate and generous.

My students work hard and are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.

Our school population is almost seventy percent economically disadvantaged and almost seventy percent Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, much of our district is still very rural and the poverty rate is high.

Our school is a unique program in the district and is still pretty new. Students take college classes while still in high school and are able to graduate at the end of four years with an Associate's degree if they work hard. Many of our students are first generation college students, so this is a huge opportunity! We have an extremely limited budget that thankfully provides for the most basic supplies that we need; however, we frequently don't have extra money for enrichment supplies that really help connect the students with the concepts we teach.

My Project

Ecology, the study of the relationships and interactions of ecosystems, is an important part of the biology curriculum. It seeks to understand the vital connections between plants and animals and the world around them. It also provides information about the benefits of ecosystems and how we can use Earth’s resources in ways that leave the environment healthy for future generations. I am always looking to make our lab activities more engaging and relevant for students, and I found some lab kits that I think will greatly enhance our Ecology unit.

With all of the pressing ecological issues we face daily, it is important for students to be well informed citizens who understand theses challenges as well as the challenges that future generations will face.

I would like to purchase two different Carolina EcoKits, the Changing Ecosystems kit and the Endangered Species kit, so that I can incorporate some new activities in our Biology classroom. These kits are great because they come with all the materials needed to do the activity, and they will allow students to learn in a fun and engaging way!

Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school have the best learning environment possible!
