The students at our school arrive HUNGRY for science discovery every day. As teachers, we are in constant search for resources to feed this hunger. By the end of the school year, we would like for our students to reflect upon their year and have an overwhelming feeling of success in all subject areas. This is why we are incorporating science with technology, engineering, art, and math for this project.
We are a K-8 school in a very small, close-knit community.
We serve students from 4-K to 8th grade. Most of our students have been with us since they were four years old, so they all work very well together and have very strong bonds with not only their peers, but also teachers, administration, and community members. Our school is very welcoming to new faces. Each school member, whether student or staff, contributes to the success of our school.
My Project
Students will need to identify the structure and function of the major components of both animal and plant cells. To begin this project, students will utilize their Chromebooks and microscopes to research animal and plant cells. Half of the students will be assigned to animal cells and the other half will be assigned to plant cells. Each student will then receive a canvas and acrylic paint to paint the major structure of their cell. The art teacher will join us to ensure proper painting techniques are reviewed and utilized by students. This project will heighten students' skills in technology and art while they are also learning about the importance of cellular structure and function. After students finish their painting they will write a description of the structure and function of their cell and the art techniques used to create their masterpiece!
For many of my students, this will be the first, and possibly only, opportunity to use a canvas to express their artistic abilities.
This integration project will reinforce their painting skills and improve their knowledge of cellular structure.
