This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in Cleveland, Ohio. All students attending qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and most of them live in generational poverty. Despite the barriers that come with teaching in an underserved neighborhood, there have been major academic and cultural improvements in the past few years. (We are no longer a failing school!) We have also become a STEM school that is dedicated to integrating technology into our curriculum to ensure that our scholars are prepared for an increasingly technological professional world.
The major focus of the first grade is to become fluent first grade readers.
We spend a large portion of our day in small groups or centers, where some students are working on independent or small group projects, and some students are working with me for differentiated instruction. This is where the easel would be a transformative tool.
My Project
Our first grade class does small groups for reading, writing, and math. During small group instruction, students are working with the teacher's guidance at their specific level. During this time, we work with tools such as math manipulatives or leveled reader text sets.
A dry erase board easel would take small group instruction to the next level.
A dry erase easel is crucial to being able to model new skills on the board. It also could give students an opportunity to 'show what they know' in small groups. The pocket charts are also a good way to have key vocabulary terms, or math tricks posted so students can refer to during work time.
