Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing people, and they come from very diverse backgrounds. The one common variable across most of their lives is the existence of some type of intense challenge. My school is a Title 1 school. A very large percentage of the students have to contend with challenges that would be difficult for most adults. They are extremely bright. A very large percentage are either first or second generation immigrants. They know what it means to work hard. They are humble and truly value the opportunity to attend school and get an education. Above all they are resilient.

They use the myriad challenges in their lives as a springboard for improving themselves and the world around them.

The stories I've heard about what some of the students have been forced to endure are absolutely gut-wrenching. These students somehow face the impossible odds and horrible challenges in their lives with resolute determination AND good humor. Without fail my students make me smile and laugh almost as soon as I see them every single day. They are amazing, and it is a privilege to teach them.

My Project

Students feel extremely discouraged when they know they are far behind their peers. Those students most heavily impacted by the Covid19 pandemic are those who were already farthest behind. Many of my students receive little educational support at home, which has greatly diminished their academic interest during the pandemic. However, I've had a break through recently. I have been using graphic novels to explore the ideas we are covering in Social Studies; it has been a smashing success. Now the students’ engagement is unprecedented. During the last mandated distance-learning period, I assigned two graphic novels as reading material. Students that have NEVER done ANY homework before not only read both graphic novels, but they were excited and wanted to engage with the material. In my years as an educator, I have never seen such a turnaround in enthusiasm for exploring the ideas and culture of the Middle Ages as I did with the inclusion of Beowulf and King Arthur graphic novels into our coursework. I followed that up by using the graphic novel Arrival as the centerpiece for learning about human migration and modern immigration. It was another success.

Graphic novels are an extremely effective way to get students reading and exploring new ideas.

Education is evolving and it is vital, as an educator, to understand our students and how to guide them towards success. It's important for students to learn how to sit down, focus and read a book. Graphic novels can take students who refuse to pick up a book, to reading, engaging and exploring. A graphic novel classroom library will inspire my students to grapple with the material, and become the young scholars they are capable of becoming. Please help me and my students to begin a new age of exploration together. Thank you!
