Ms. Winslow from Minneapolis MN is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need materials to sanitize and flush out their school-owned brass instruments such as mouthpiece brushes, instrument snakes, and sanitizing spray.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Every day, my students play their instrument for an hour, and they often play during their lunch time and after school. They love to play, but that's a lot of spit going into their instruments!
Minnesota has one of the worst achievement gaps in the country, and of free or reduced price lunch students, only 25% of Latino Minneapolis students graduate from high school.
I work at a public charter school proving that all children are capable of success, regardless of zip code, race, or other factors. 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and 99% of our students are students of color. 100% of our students are on the path to and through college.
We just started a band program this school year with 78 students, in part because of the generosity of DonorsChoose donors. Because of the demographics of the students we serve, they are all using school-owned instruments. Throughout the year, we've been focusing on daily instrument care and maintenance, and we're planning on doing a large-scale instrument cleaning at the end of the school year. This will ensure instruments are clean and ready for the next school year. The materials in the project are all for cleaning brass instruments - trumpets, trombones, baritones, and tubas. The snakes will go through the pipes of the brass instruments, much like a plumber would to clean out pipes. The mouthpiece brushes clean out the part of the instrument that touches the mouth, and sanitizer spray will finish everything off. Kids really enjoy going through this process, especially if we're outside in the warm weather.
While so many schools in our country are choosing to cut the arts, we are taking on this endeavor because we recognize the tremendous impact music involvement can have on students' overall academic success and happiness.
Very few of our students are able to rent or purchase instruments, yet we aim to provide equitable access to the joy of music making. We want to make sure our students are playing on quality instruments and that they are invested in the upkeep of the instrument they use.
