My Students

I work with 110 first grade students in a small rural district. A majority of our students receive free lunch. Though our area has over 60% of our students living below the poverty level we are trying to give them experiences beyond basic reading and math. The students are eager to learn new things and love any technology we can integrate into their learning. By applying critical and creative thinking skills, my students will be better prepared for their future.

My Project

Engaging youngsters through technology is easy but getting them to think critically and creatively is not. This small robot is exactly what they need to expand their thinking beyond their prior experiences.

The Evo is the perfect tool to develop critical and creative thinking skills because it is easy to learn and engaging.

Students will learn to code the small robots to maneuver along the desired paths. Though tablets can be used to work with these robots students can use basic markers to code the movements making it a sustainable activity.

By working with the Evos the students can work cooperatively to develop games and activities for others groups to experience. They will need to reason the best path around obstacles and create direction codes for the robots as a small group. Working cooperatively through a task involving multiple possible solutions yet agreeing on the "best" solution is a difficult task for first graders, and adults. These skills are vital to their future success. I want to give them the opportunity to use critical and creative thinking skills while getting ready for their future.
