Our high school, composed of eight smaller learning communities (SLCs), is a comprehensive educational institution whose mission is to provide an environment that enables all students including high achieving, ELL, Literacy, and Instructional Support to grow holistically.
For twelve years, the Corporate Center SLC has been catering to the English Language Learner population of the entire school.
These students, who came from different parts of the world, have different social and educational backgrounds. Teachers have been introduced to varied cultures from different North and South American countries, such as El Salvador, Mexico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rica. Other students hailed from Uzbekistan, Italy, Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Albania, Montenegro. Our African-American students originated from Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone. We also have students from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Our highly diversified student population is something that the school is very proud of. However, to be able to support them academically, there are struggles and hurdles that the students and the teachers have to overcome.
My Project
Ninth graders are scheduled to take the New York State Living Environment Regents in June, and one of the topics included in the exam is evolution. With the requested instructional materials, the students would be able to compare the structural changes that take place as humans evolve from one species to the next. On a regular basis, students are taught human evolution using pictures only. With the use of these model skulls, they would be able to use tangible materials to further enhance their understanding and retention of the topic. Hopefully, this would give them a chance to get better grades in the state exam.
