It is so important to teach our youth to start eating healthy at a young age in order to reverse the trend of obesity in America! Hello, I teach high school Nutrition and Food Prep I & II in central Iowa. My students range from 9th to 12th grade with the majority coming in as new freshman. We have a very diverse school with over 50% minority students as well at 73% free and reduced lunch and a very large special education population mainstreamed throughout our school. Our school is considered high poverty, but we have a lot of pride and the most caring teachers in the business. Though we were the first school in the district, we are the last to get renovated in the upcoming years and receive the least amount of funding which is why donors like you are so important!

My budget as a food teacher is very low, especially when I have over 120 students to feed each semester along with the endless repairs that my severely outdated classroom needs every year. This doesn't leave much room for actual supplies and amazing ideas that I have for my students. These kids know they get everything last and they know our school is the dumping grounds for the really bad students. We are a last chance school for some of these kids and if we don't have the resources to make their education fun and interactive then we have failed them, not themselves, but us. We must fight for every penny we get at my school because everyone's mentality is "Why waste it on them?" and this message is only teaching our students to not see better for themselves. We need people like you to see that we matter and we deserve equal support as the middle class public schools.

As a nutrition teacher in a low income school, it can be quite a challenge to teach students to make healthy choices when they come from tough backgrounds were fast food is cheap and convenient and they are the ones making dinner for their brothers and sisters. That is why I think it is more important to teach my students about portion control than to choose organic foods because let's face it, we live in a world that encourages poor nutrition! Organic foods are an unrealistic purchase for my students families who need something quick and cheap. Most of my students have never heard of portion control and what servings sizes are. Food replica kits are an amazing way to give my students a real hands on approach to portion control! They see what portions really look like instead of me using my hands to show them, they get to see what a balanced dinner is supposed to look like on your plate and how you really can eat what you want and what you can afford as long as you watch your portions! I always say "Everything in Moderation", but without something for them to see and touch and feel they have nothing to revert back to when at a fast food restaurant or even in the cafeteria line.

I know this project and these expensive replicas are something I would never be able to afford with my budget, but are going to make such a difference for these students for the rest of their lives! That is why Family and Consumer Science education is so important and why your support of it is so important because we aren't teaching these kids NOW, we are teaching them FOR LIFE and making an everlasting impact on their future! Thanks you.
