Our classroom is a buzzing hive of busy kindergarten workers. You will find us learning and exploring in hands-on math and literacy centers most of the day. While we work hard, we also play hard on the playground and during disco-dance breaks throughout the day!
My students are high energy and curious kindergarteners; they are excited every morning to walk into the classroom.
We are learning everyday to value our diversity and support all of the members of our classroom family.
Our school is a diverse, Title 1 elementary school; all students and staff come to school everyday with an "all-in" attitude, which really shows in our track record of excellence.
My Project
Every morning as students file into our kindergarten kingdom, they unpack their bags, lunch boxes and jackets into their 12x12 cubbies- and when they are done, boy are they full! Our students sit at large, round tables and have a seating arrangement that changes frequently; while this set-up is wonderful for group work and community building, it is not the greatest for organization and storage.
These seat pockets could revolutionize the way we run our classroom! They would provide our students with a home-base in which they could easily store their classroom books and school supplies, because there is absolutely no room in their cubbies for storage. The seat pockets would also allow the students to work in more flexible groupings; kids could easily slide their chair- and their supplies- from place to place.
Some of the kids in our class live without many basics or things to call their very own; they would really appreciate being able to have space for their things.
The biggest difference this project would make will be in the ability to easily group children more flexibly.
The great part about learning in an extremely diverse classroom is the interaction and social transmission that the kids get from working with each other- it is important that they work with kids of varying interests, abilities and backgrounds. With the seat pockets, we could completely change up our seating charge in a matter of seconds!
