Everything has its place for an organized working space!
My students need 24 Songmics wire storage cubes to keep workbooks, journals, & supplies organized, plus a Childcraft cubby to serve as a mailbox system for sending home completed assignments, homework, newsletters, flyers, etc.
Ours is an at-risk school on the east side of Las Vegas. My students' parents want their children to be happy & successful. They understand that education is key to their child having a better life and support their child's learning as best they can. More often than not, both parents must work to keep the family afloat, so students often spend more face time with me during the week than with their parents. For this reason, I strive to make our classroom a safe, attractive, organized, comfortable haven for my students.
My new classroom needs student storage to maximize the time spent learning & minimize time spent searching for misplaced materials.
Our classroom has 1 wardrobe filled with mandatory curriculum. There's no place to put other supplies, lunchboxes, mail, etc. We need cubbies to serve as student mailboxes -- a place to put papers, projects & notices waiting to go home. We also need 24 wire cubes to hold student workbooks & journals, book boxes, library books, lunch boxes and shared office supplies. This will help teach & encourage organization & personal responsibility, as the children learn to take care of books and other materials.
Organization is a key factor in creating a well run classroom. It's so easy to lose 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there during transitions as students search for misplaced materials. By the end of the day, a disorganized class can lose 1/2 an hour or more! During the course of a school year, that lost time can add up to 100 hours of lost time! Time that should be put to better use.
My students need mailboxes and cube storage because they want to be neat and organized, but need an easy to follow structure where everything has a place & everyone takes turns being responsible for putting materials away correctly.
Helping them become competent & CONFIDENT in their ability to organize their world has a lasting impact on children. Parents often mention how the organizational skills students learn at school have a positive impact at home.
The cubby unit will be turned into student mailboxes. This is where students stash their work when it's ready to go home. It allows me to sort their "mail" & ensure that every child receives the homework, flyers, announcements, newsletters, etc. that keep parents informed. At the end of the day, our student mail monitor can tell instantly who still needs to collect his/her mail.
My students are organized into teams of 4-5 children. The wire cubes will be assembled in sets of 4 to create space for students to organize their team workbooks, journals, lunch boxes, shared office supplies, book boxes, library books, afternoon snacks, etc. Team members take turns distributing, monitoring & returning those materials to the cubes. This dramatically reduces wasted time & makes for a more pleasant & productive working environment.
