This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are fun, loving, and energetic teens and young adults who have multiple disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Traumatic Brain Injury. Our school is an inner-city high school in Columbus, Ohio and 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students have come to the United States from a variety of different countries. These students and their families face a wide range of challenges on top of the challenges that come with having a child with a disability. Regardless, our students come to school each day ready and eager to learn.
My students require a small group setting for all of their academic learning.
I teach reading, math, science, and social studies to them each day. I also try to incorporate as much technology, art, music, social skills, and life skills as possible in order to provide them the most well-rounded education possible.
My Project
As part of our math, science, reading and general life skills lessons, our students are fortunate to get to participate in a variety of cooking lessons. These lessons are highly engaging and motivating for the students and provide the opportunity to gain many skills.
In order to expand the students' experiences, we could use a few additions to our kitchen.
We need a double burner and toaster oven to be able to use when we don't have access to the full-size oven, which is in a neighboring classroom. We also always need aluminum foil and wax paper for easy clean-up. Finally, cleaning wipes are an easy way to ensure that we leave no mess behind.
