Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in an inner-city Title 1 school, my students face many challenges in and out of school. The vast majority of my students are English Language Learners, many of them refugees from various countries. Many of my students have special needs that must be met.
My students are also beautifully creative.
They love to explore instruments. They come up with ideas I never would have thought of. They find humor in their mistakes. I learn so much their perspective. They have so much potential, and I love that's it's my job to help them unlock it.
My Project
One of my most favorite things about teaching music is seeing my students work together as a group. One of the best instruments to help facilitate that is the classroom xylophone. Right now my classroom only has enough xylophones for about half a class of students to get their own instrument.
Donations to this project will help to give every student the opportunity to play and create on their own instrument.
Ensemble projects not only teach my students about music, but it also teaches them social skills: how to collaborate with others, how to work with one another kindly, how to share ideas, and how to problem solve. With a full set of xylophones, my students would be able to work together more easily and efficiently to not only create and play beautiful music but also to learn how to be kinder gentler human beings.
