This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a large variety of students from an urban area in Virginia. My students are typical urban city school children, representing a range of ages, in ninth to twelfth grades, and including standard students, limited English Learners, highly motivated, or gifted (International Baccalaureate Program), and special education students. In addition, they are mostly minority (including African-American, African, Middle-Eastern, and Hispanic), underprivileged and at-risk students. Many have specific learning disabilities and require varied and specialized instruction.
My students are often tech-savvy, but they do not have access to a lot of technology.
We do not have enough computers in our school to meet our needs.
My Project
We have a group of students who are concerned about the environment and have taken it upon themselves to organize and recycle in our school. This is a student-led movement. They meet once or twice a week after school and empty recycle bins for the whole school into the recycle dumpster just because they care. However, the school does not have and can not provide bins for the school. Many teachers use re-purposed garbage cans and cardboard boxes. However, they often get emptied with regular garbage or filled with regular trash.
We NEED some recycle bins in our school.
This project will provide a small bin for most classes and office spaces in the building, as well as some large cans for the cafeteria and other gathering spaces. Additionally, the large cans with wheels will help gather and empty the smaller cans.
